Large-Amplitude Elastic Free-Surface Waves: Geometric Nonlinearity and Peakons

نویسندگان

چکیده

An instantaneous sub-surface disturbance in a two-dimensional elastic half-space is considered. The propagates through the material until it reaches free surface, after which out along surface. In conventional theory, free-surface conditions on unknown surface are projected onto flat plane \(y = 0\), so that linear model may be used. Here, however, we present formulation takes explicit account of fact location priori, and show how to solve this more difficult problem numerically. This reveals that, while linearized theory gives an accurate decaying waves travel outwards can under-estimate strength rebound above disturbance. some circumstances, non-linear solution fails finite time, due formation “peakon” at We suggest brittle failure might practice initiated those times locations.

Effects of Geometric Nonlinearity on Stress Analysis in Large Amplitude Vibration of Moderately Thick Annular Functionally Graded Plate

This paper deals with the nonlinear free vibration of thick annular functionally graded material plates. The thickness is assumed to be constant. Material properties are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The formulations are based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory and...

Abstract  In this paper , the nonlinear the nonlinear free and forced axisymmetric vibration of a thin circular functionally graded plate with rigid core is formulated in terms of von-Karman’s dynamic equation , and a semi-analytical approach is developed.Functionally graded material (FGM) properties vary through the thickness of the plate.FGM s are spatial composites within which material prop...

Solitary water waves of large amplitude generated by surface pressure

We consider exact nonlinear solitary water waves on a shear flow with an arbitrary distribution of vorticity. Ignoring surface tension, we impose a non-constant pressure on the free surface. Starting from a uniform shear flow with a flat free surface and a supercritical wave speed, we vary the surface pressure and use a continuation argument to construct a global connected set of symmetric soli...

Amplitude and Phase Variations of Surface Waves

Lateral heterogeneity of the Earth has begun to be mapped extensively by measurements of phase velocities of surface waves since the installation of global digital network. The methods used in such studies are, however, based on simple ray theory: observed phase delays are assumed to be integrations of slowness along the great circles connecting sources and receivers. On the other hand, wave th...
